Greetings! The start of the 2022-2023 school term in late August was enthusiastically received by all at school. This term marks a new beginning; filled with promise and optimism! The 10th Year Anniversary of EEESMA School for the Deaf will be celebrated with several special events over the next few months. Many new students have enrolled to school and exciting new programs are being rolled out during 2023. We are proud to announce: – the 14 passenger van to bring students to school, generously granted by San Miguel Community Foundation, is scheduled to arrive in late January – visits from Signs & Smiles.org are scheduled during 2023 to initiate a Teacher Training Program, digital books in Mexican Sign Language and much more, running over a two year period – reopening of Deseñas, the tienda at EEESMA, will take place every Friday from 11am – 2pm when school is in session, featuring handcrafts made by the students in the Vocational Training Workshops as they transition from school to employment Our thanks to you for your loyal support and wishing you the very best that 2023 has to offer! With appreciation, John Doherty |

In recognition of the 10th Anniversary ofEEESMA School for the Deaf, a Logo Design Competition was held in August. Congratulations to Diana González, Distrito Rotaract 4140, whose design was declared the winner. Thank you Ron Felton for helping to facilitate this. EEESMA now has a new logo; both symbolic and beautiful, don’t you agree? 2022 Mexico’s National Day of the Deaf was celebrated in San Miguel de Allende by the students and others in the Deaf community on November 28th at Centro Cultura Ignacio Ramirez. Teachers and staff led the activities along with invited guests from DF. Art, dancing, theatre and general all-around good fun commemorated this important day. Held on December 9th, the 6th Annual Holiday Craft Fair was a great success; best in the school’s history! It was gratifying to see such a super turnout of shoppers, volunteers and supporters. Thank you to everyone who helped create such a caring and good spirited event. Christmas Posada & PastorelaIt felt wonderful to return to “normal” after almost 3 years; to bring the whole EEESMA family together for this traditional event, one in which the students are so proud to participate. The smiles witnessed all around speak volumes. A big “Gracias” & “Trabajo Bien Hecho” to Sanjuana, her faculty and staff for making the day such a memorable and joyful one for all! Laurita, Student, Now A Full-Fledged Teacher! We are delighted and very proud to announce that Laurita has earned her Bachelor of Education Degree and is now filling the position of Primary School Teacher at EEESMA. Laurita, a high school graduate of EEESMA, has been completing her degree with the support of her family and her dedicated team at the school. Laurita is determined to “pay it forward”, is an excellent role model to the younger students and is an inspiration to us all. She sends her heartfelt gratitude to those donors and supporters who encouraged her and were instrumental in making her career dreams come true! Welcome Danita to Deseñas! We are delighted to welcome Danita Brisson as lead volunteer at Deseñas, EEESMA’s tienda. Her past experience and expertise in marketing and communications, not to mention her passion to help the kids, is so very valued and appreciated. In Danita’s own words: “EEESMA School for the Deaf is pleased to announce the reopening of our gift shop this Friday at Calle Canal #152. Look for the purple and white ribbons and street side signage. After a very long absence due to the pandemic, we are opening to the public again on Fridays only, when school is in session, from 11 am to 2 pm. Join us and browse through the beautiful products handcrafted by the students in their woodworking, fabric arts and jewelry workshops. Whether it’s a must-have treasure for yourself or a memorable gift for a loved one, you’re bound to find something that catches your eye. Each piece is as unique as the student who created it and each purchase provides the student maker with financial support as they work towards a brighter future. Prices are reasonable and credit cards are accepted.” Mil gracias and welcome aboard Danita ….from all of us! |
There are no government-supported schools for the Deaf in the state of Guanajuato. Public schools offer little or no sign language instruction. Opened in 2012, EEESMA offers kids who are Deaf a better chance in life. We need your help to ensure EEESMA School for the Deaf continues to offer Deaf Education to children and young adults in the area. There are no other options. The ability to attract and retain well-qualified teachers with Mexican Sign Language skills continues to be a big challenge. Please join us in continuing to build a great school for Deaf children. Fundraising at EEESMA is accomplished exclusively by volunteers. #deafeducation #deafpride #signlanguage “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” |
